In this class we will pay homage to leaves and rust by botanical and dye printing fabrics to create individual fabric vignettes that can be tied together to form a modern day prayer flag. We will use vintage fabrics along with torn fabrics of silk, cotton, and linen.
Traditionally prayer flags are used to promote peace, strength, compassion and wisdom. The messages are believed to be carried by the wind to the people. Today they are a simple loving and artistic way to connect hearts with others and these particular flags carry a message from nature.
We will add ink jet printed fabric scenes, words, stitching, lace, collaged fabrics, whatever your heart desires to our modern, nature themed prayer flags. Each vignette will be stitched to a torn muslin strip that has been used in the dye process and in turn is dyed.
The class begins with an evening class so we can leave our rust prints overnight which makes them richer. We will also make some botanical dye prints on fabrics and talk about composition of our pieces. The second full day we will continue to dye print, stitch our pieces, and put them altogether in the manner you choose.
At the end of class we will have several individual prayer flags, which you can choose to hang individually or tie together to form a garland.
