Once I started botanical dye printing I realized the possibilities are endless and I wanted to have some sort of documentation of the results. I decided to create a sample book that seems to keep evolving just as the experimentation of dyeing does. In class I will share with you the process of creating your own dye sample book. Not only is it educational but it is also a work of art.

We will experiment with a variety of botanicals (i.e eucalyptus, roses, onion skins) and rusted items using different mordants (i.e. tannin, iron, copper, soy, alum) and different types of fabrics, ribbon, vintage linens, and even some papers.

Day 1: Besides botanical and rust dyeing using a bundle and steam technique, we will experiment using natural dyes, color washes with pigment dyes, mark making using iron water or soy and discovering the difference in color after using different mordant methods. All of these fabrics and paper experimental pieces will be added and recorded in the sample book we create.

Day 2: After the fabrics are dyed, washed and dried we will use them to create a cloth book cover by ironing and sewing the fabrics to a ready cut Tintex interfacing. The book pages will be ready to join together and insert in the book with simple sewing and/or glue. One side of book page will be fabric to sew or pin our samples on, the other side will be brown kraft type paper to write our information on. You will also be given written dye recipes and “how to” instructions to add in the book.

You must be prepared to smell the heady aroma of eucalyptus and onion skins steaming and be open to the surprise transformation of the dye process. You can’t plan what will happen but that’s part of why this process is so intriguing to me and now there will be a sample record book for you to refer to.
