Stitches + Glue - Mixed Media with Fabric & Paper

$ 170

I love fabric and thread just as much as I love paper and glue. So why not combine the two? In this full-day workshop we’ll explore a variety of techniques for using both paper and fabric as we stitch and stick our way to a textured and layered mixed media collage.
We’ll combine paints with rubber stamps, paper, and fabric to make our background, learn a fun and easy technique for using stencils to create a layered focal point combining fabric and paint, and finish with final accents and optional stitches.
(If sewing isn’t your thing you can “stick” with glue. And if you do sew, the stitches can be as basic or fancy as you’d like and you can do a little or a lot – it’s all up to you.)

Material Fee $10 paid to teacher at beginning of class includes:

• 3 colors of size 8 DMC pearl cotton thread (5 yards per color)
• Gold metallic thread (3 yards)
• 2 Sewing needles – 1 Sharp and one Tapestry
• 1” Chip brush for painting
• Matte medium
• Fabric Glue
• A selection of papers, fabrics, and embellishments to share

Teacher will also provide:
• Use of shared stencils and stamps
?

Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

• Canvas or birch panel (I recommend something without give - no stretched canvas) – between 8” x 10” and 9” x 12” is best.
• 3 colors of coordinating paint (ie, beige, brown, and caramel) plus a few contrasting colors (I like PaperArtsy Fresco Finish paints, but you can use whatever you’d like. If you’re using an artist-grade paint like Golden, I recommend that you gesso your substrate prior to class.)
• Scissors (and fabric scissors if you keep them separate.)
• Permanent ink pads in black and brown (I use StazOn and Archival Ink.)
• A variety of fabrics and collage papers in a color palette that works with your paints.
• Baby wipes and / or paper towels

Optional Supplies:
• A selection of embellishments for both collage layers and to embellishing (ie skeleton leaves, washi tape, real leaves and dried flowers, small stones, metal pieces, etc…)
• Additional needles and /or varied colors and weights of thread if you have favorites in your own stash (I like pearl cotton thread (usually size 8,) metallic threads, and stranded embroidery floss.)
