Botanical Lace

$ 170

NOTE: Sewing machine experience required. If you are traveling, Montavilla Sewing Center will provide a few loaner machines to share. If you live locally, and can bring your machine that would be great so we can have enough machines for everyone to use!

In this class you will learn how create imaginative machine lace to incorporate into another art project or simply enjoy as is. The process is fun and the piece you create can be a random assemblage of fibers and ephemera or a structured mesh with botanical motifs. Free-motion sewing skills will give you a wider range of possibilities but is not necessary to complete the project.

Please be courteous to others by arriving for class with the correct supplies. Contact me at 503-631-8806 or helene.m.knott@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Materials Fee $30 paid at beginning of class includes:

two kinds of stabilizer, decorative yarns/ephemera, floral motifs, and threads

Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

• Sewing machine: with a free-motion foot and a zig zag foot. NOTE: There will be a limited number of loaner machines available at the venue, contact the event organizer if you can bring your own machine
• Botanical novelty prints: The kit includes a variety of botanical and other fabric motifs but if you have something special you would like to include you can bring your own motif fabric. For best results, the motifs should be no smaller than 1” and no larger than 4”.
• Extra sewing machine needles: Topstitching or Microtex size 12. As you will be sewing through a sticky product, your needles will get gummed up rapidly. NOTE: you can also bring a small bottle of Purell and tissues, I’ve found that you can clean sticky residue off needles with this.
• Sharp ‘craft’ style scissors: A pair with precision tips strong enough to cut through multiple layers of fused fabric.
• Black ‘Sharpie’® pen: The ‘fine’ point will be more visible than the ‘ultra-fine’.
• Glue stick
• 12” ruler
• Sewing pins
