With the intention of focusing on gratitude, I spent a good part of 2020 creating special handmade books to honor the important places, people and memories that have been a such an important part of my life.
I would love to teach you how to create this lovely keepsake, a substantial canvas book, using a theme that is close to your heart.
During this 2 day workshop I will teach you how to create stunning metal transfers and how to connect your transfers to pages without using glue. You will learn several simple bookbinding skills while creating a book out of painted and collaged canvas. Also I will share with you my favorite collage and surface design techniques using gesso, ink & paint to create beautiful textures, colors and surfaces.
Your final book will be approximately 7 1/2 x 61/2 with at least 6 metal transfers and 20 writing surfaces.
I look forward to sharing this process with you, I hope you can join us!
Materials Fee $30 paid at beginning of class includes:
TIN, 6 pieces of tin for your transfers
NEEDLE for sewing book.
WAX LINEN for sewing the book, neutral color
EPHEMERA for collage
AND A FEW HANDMADE GOODIES!
I will also have patina, extra paint, Adirondack dye re-inkers, masking tape, stencils, heat guns and heavier glue available for everyone in class.
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
Please read the supply list now and collect your supplies early. You may have to order some things online, please allow plenty of time for this. I ask that you bring these exact supplies to class because I have tested them and know they will work for this specific project. I will never ask you to bring something that we won’t use in class. If you have trouble finding anything, or if you have any questions, please contact me at least one week prior to class at email@example.com.
-WHITE GESSO, at least 10 oz.
Utrecht Artists' Acrylic Gesso or Liquitex work best, the thicker the better.

-ACRYLIC PAINT OR INK, 3 or 4 of your favorite colors
-LIQUID MATTE MEDIUM, 4 OZ.

-A BONE FOLDER if you have one, if not, the end of a pair of scissors will work.
-UNPRIMED COTTON CANVAS, ROLLED, 10 or 12 oz., 1 YARD
***You will need to tear this into 2 pieces, 15” x 36” and 15” x 15”.
***You will also need to cover both sides of each piece with a thin coat of gesso and please have this done and dry before the beginning of class. You will have some canvas leftover.
-WAXED LINEN THREAD
1 roll is fine if you can find it.
-10 PHOTOS AND A THEME FOR YOUR BOOK.
Please choose a theme for your book. It can be based on a person, place, pet, experience, just about anything. Then gather 10 of your favorite photos representing your theme. They should be high in contrast, a variety of sizes 4 x 6 and smaller and printed on a laser printer on inexpensive plain copy paper. It is very important to use cheap plain copy paper. If you bring it to a copy store to have it printed, bring your own paper. They often print on fancy slick paper that will not work for this process. 6 of these will be used for your metal transfers
Paper should be thinner than card stock
Sewing pattern paper, old book pages, old letters, journal pages, cheesecloth and ledger pages will all work well.
