Hand Stitched Button Medallions

$ 95

If you sew, sooner or later you end up with stray buttons. They may be a couple left over from a garment project or something you inherited from your grandmother’s sewing basket; some quilters actually collect unusual or antique buttons. Most of the time, you end up with an assortment of different buttons that don’t match. What to do with them? They can be worked into lovely embroidered medallions with stitches that embrace each button in a delicate detailed frame hand embroidered on a ground of felt or wool. The resulting stitched medallions can be assembled into a small quilt, worked into other projects or simply enjoyed for their own beauty. Though they appear intricate, the embroidery is made up of simple compounded stitches.

Please be courteous to others by arriving for class with the correct supplies. Contact me at 503-631-8806 or helene.m.knott@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Materials Fee $25 paid at beginning of class includes:

a 4-Patch base block, and a square of wool in a coordinating color.*(see note). Stabilizer, embroidery floss, a marking pen/pencil, embroidery needles, a button, and several embroidery stitch layouts. Note: The fabrics in the kits will vary but there will be plenty of color coordinated sets to choose from.

Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

• Embroidery or craft scissors
• Needle Puller (optional): This is a little rubber circle that helps grip the needle to pull it through bulky materials.
• Thimble (optional): Some embroiderers like to use a thimble, some do not; bring one if you need one.
• Portable light and/or magnifier (optional): Good lighting is essential for handwork and the lighting in classroom environments isn’t always up to the task. It can be helpful to have additional, focused lighting in the form of an Ott type lamp or the LED type that hangs around your neck, some lights come with an attached magnifier lens, and this too can be useful.
