A journal can be a safe place to record your secrets, a substrate to dabble on with paints and collage, a personalized recipe book, a special gift, or simply a site to jot down ideas for your next masterpiece. Let’s start from scratch and create a unique book with blank pages, ready to be filled as you wish.
We will focus on the cover in class by using some simple free-motion stitching, adding some touches of paint, and combining your designs with scrap fabrics.
If you are reluctant to try free-motion stitching, you can adapt your designs and enhance them with standard machine sewing. Touches of hand-embroidery can also add wonderful detail to the cover.
Using watercolor paper we will build the inside pages and, if time allows, add some splashes of color or some paper collage elements. Then we’ll assemble the parts using a technique that does not require sewing. This binding does not use the stitched bindings used by some bookmakers.

Materials Fee $35  paid at beginning of class includes:

All materials to make your book will be provided including the substrate for the cover, white fabric for your designs, a selection of colorful fabric scraps, watercolor paper, acrylic paint, paper ephemera, ribbon, embroidery threads, buttons and magnets. All of the necessary tools will be available for your use.

Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

Fabric and paper scissors
-An art apron or paint shirt
-An assortment of fabric scraps in your choice of colors to enhance your cover. I use prints that are not too busy. Tone-on-tone patterns work nicely and don’t distract from the main image.
