Altered Books-We Can Use Them for Art, Or They’ll Be Shredded for Pulp

Many artists feel that turning a book into a mixed-media sculpture is a desecration. In this workshop, as the title implies, we take books slated for the land-fill, and turn them into amazing art forms that are visually wonderful.
Using recycled books, collage, pens and art papers, attendees will create an altered book sculpture worthy of display in your home or at your local book arts exhibition.
Techniques we will practice:
• How to pick the book
• Covering the existing cover—the book binder’s way
• Cut-a-ways and folds to create a 3-D effect
• Removing or adding text to frame your narrative
• Making accordion fold pull-out pages
• Adding pockets and inserts

Most all materials, including books and tools, will be provided. They will be yours to keep.

Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

A pair of scissors
A Crop-a-Dile hole punch and eyelet setter
