Tapestries are usually woven but some from the past were hand embroidered. One of the most well known embroidered tapestry is the Bayeux Tapestry made in France in the 11th Century, commemorating the Norman Conquest of England by William the Duke of Normandy. This exquisite hand embroidered tapestry measures approximately 20 inches tall by a whopping 224 feet wide and consists of 58 scenes in beautifully detailed hand stitching.
No worries – in this class you will make a more modest sized tapestry measuring about 8” x 10” and rendered in a variety of hand stitches of your choice. The subject will be a still life styled after Van Gogh’s painting of sunflowers. The work will be carried out in a casual, free form approach following a general outline. Many Impressionist paintings can serve as inspiration for thread painting by hand, but the bold brush strokes Van Gogh used in his paintings, are easy to translate into stitchery. NOTE: This is handwork class, no sewing machine necessary.
