Do you love the look of watercolor but aren't quite sure how to get started? Watercolor is everywhere in mixed media lately, with a dizzying selection of watercolor tools and products to choose from. In this class, we'll take the fear factor out of this fun and versatile form of painting and layer in lots of fun mixed media elements.

We'll start by learning a few terms, approaches, and brush strokes that are the foundation for an endless variety of techniques and projects. We'll then add in several household and mixed media products to create cool effects and unique looks.

With these core concepts under our belts, we'll play and experiment to create one-of-a-kind backgrounds. Then we'll make watercolored focal points both with basic brush strokes and by incorporating stamps and coloring images that can be combined with collage elements and other supplies to make beautifully layered mixed media artwork to frame, use as a card, or add to a journal.

Materials Fee $5 paid at beginning of class includes:

• A variety of add-ins to create fun textures and effects with your watercolors
• A technique worksheet along with two hand-drawn images printed on watercolor paper that you can watercolor and use in your projects
• Stamps and stencils to share
• Some of my handmade gold watercolor paint to share
• A variety of collage papers, ephemera, washi tape, etc... to build your final pieces

Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

• A basic set of watercolors with enough colors to create backgrounds and elements with variety (you can also mix your own if you feel confident.) Don't forget black and white! (Watercolor is a discipline where the quality of your supplies really does make a difference, but for this class you can even bring a set of Prang or Crayola kids watercolors and still learn the techniques and make the projects.)
• A palette (white works best - anything from a glass plate to a plastic or ceramic palette is fine)
• At least 1 paintbrush - I suggest size 2 and 4 round. (A good starting set is sizes 2, 4, 6, and 8 rounds.) Princeton Select is a good quality but still economical starting brand. Kids and cheap craft store brushes tend to shed and are very hard to use.
• A pad of at least 10 sheets of watercolor paper (I like 140 pound... Canson XL is a great , versatile starter paper for a good price.)
• Scissors
• A permanent black pen (IE Micron) size .05 and I also like to have white and gold gel pens (I use Uni-Ball Signo.)
