I love fabric and thread just as much as I love paper and glue. So why not combine the two? In this workshop we'll explore a variety of techniques for using both paper and fabric as we stitch and stick our way to a textured and layered mixed media collage.

If sewing isn't your thing you can “stick” with glue. And if you do sew, the stitches can be as basic or fancy as you’d like and you can do a little or a lot – it’s all up to you. (Stitching demos will also be provided for those who want to learn the stitches in my samples.)

We'll combine paints with rubber stamps, paper, and fabric and make a layered and collaged background. You'll also learn a fun and easy technique for using stencils to create a layered focal point combining fabric and paint with stencils and paper, then finish with final accents and optional stitches.

There will also be a discussion and demonstration on how to combine bits and pieces to create unique embellishments to add to your piece so that you finish with a fabulous mash-up of fabric and paper that's ready to display.

Student Supply List:
• Canvas or birch panel (I recommend something without give - no stretched canvas) – between 8” x 10” and 9” x 12” is best. Even watercolor or other heavy weight paper will work depending on how you want to use your final piece.
• Scissors (both paper and fabric scissors if you keep them separate.)
• Baby wipes and / or paper towels
• An apron (if you typically use one)
• Matte medium and glue (I use mostly Tacky Glue)
• 3 colors of coordinating paint (ie, beige, brown, and caramel) plus a few contrasting colors (I like PaperArtsy Fresco Finish paints, but you can use whatever you'd like.)
• A paintbrush for the background (I just use a 1” chip brush or a flat paintbrush)
• Permanent ink pads in black and brown or any colors you typically use (I use StazOn and Archival Ink.)
• A variety of fabrics and collage papers in a color palette that works with your paints (if you have a palette picked out - otherwise, neutrals are always good.)
• A selection of embellishments for both your background and to embellish your focal point (ie skeleton leaves, washi tape, real leaves and dried flowers, small stones, metal pieces, etc…)
Optional Supplies:
• Sewing needles and /or varied colors and weights of thread if you have favorites in your own stash (I like pearl cotton thread (usually size 8,) metallic threads, and stranded embroidery floss.)
Class Kit: ($10 kit fee) paid directly to instructor at beginning of class includes:
• A variety of threads including pearl cotton and gold metallic thread
• Assorted mediums and glues
• A selection of papers, fabrics, and embellishments to share
• Use of shared stencils and stamps
• Use of shared ink pads
• Extra needles plus several of my favorite colors of paints and ink pads to share
