In this workshop create transparent and translucent elements to layer in subtle and
luminous depth that is equal parts simple and complex. We will begin with a foundation
of paint on which we will layer our transparent elements, exploring color and shape, light and shadow, personal symbols, and story-telling. Mindfully working with and against the materials to create dynamic compositions, we’ll finish our pieces with a luminous layer of wax that we will texture further for depth that can’t be achieved any other way. When the workshop is over, you will have many pieces in various stages of completion, including some done and ready to hang.

Materials Fee $15 cash paid at beginning of class includes:

generous supply of inks, encaustic medium, extra substrates, paper and ephemera, and other various mediums including paints, gel mediums, shared tools, etc

**Instructor will provide a plethora of sharable tools and supplies

Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

- 3-5 substrates of your choice (8??x10?? or larger; whatever you’re most comfortable
traveling with or shipping ) These can be cradled wood, artist boards, plywood (rough is great), etc. No plank wood, particle board, or canvas board.
- 5-8 small substrates of your choice. These may be 4?? square canvas boards or pieces of plywood, etc. They do NOT have to be cradled.
- 1 pad of tracing paper
- Basic art supplies such as scissors, craft knife, pencil, apron, water container, rags, etc.
- 3-5 medium to larger sized paint brushes (preferably different shapes and densities from each other)
- A few of your favorite colors of acrylic paint, including your favorite white (I love
titanium white) and a dark neutral color such as raw or burnt umber, Van Dykes  Brown, dark gray, or black.
- Small bottle of soft, regular, or heavy gel medium of your choice and brush to  apply it
- Various photocopied (laser) images in a mix of black and white, and color. Black
and white images are fine on cheap copy paper, made at a library or on an older  machine. Just don’t use inkjet home printer images. I recommend keeping these  images a bit on the smaller side - 4-8 images per 8.5” x 11” paper.
- Various tools for scratching, scraping and creating texture, such as awl, old pencils, hair combs, etc.
- a small stack of collage papers and ephemera
- heat gun
- Thin found objects to incorporate into the encaustic medium
