Years ago, I could not find finger-less gloves other than the bulky wool rag ones that only came in boring gray. Now they are a fashion statement, made even more popular by the character – Claire, in the series Outlander. You can find them in fancy boutiques and order them online, but to make them yourself requires knitting or crochet skills. Welcome to no-knit finger-less gloves and arm warmers. In this class you will make a pair of custom embellished hand/arm warmers without knitting a stitch. You will start with a carefully selected pair of commercially knitted socks that you will alter, and then adorn with embroidery to your heart’s content for a beautiful, unique pair of finger-less gloves like no other.
Kit Fee $7 cash paid at beginning of class includes:
2 sizes of Tapestry needles and a variety of yarns and flosses
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
• Socks: These should be commercially made, they will be easier to convert into gloves than hand knitted ones. For best results, they should be bulkier than thin dress socks and feel snug and comfortable if you slip your hand into one. You can choose a pair of ankle socks for short hand-warmers, or go for knee socks to make a pair of arm-warmers that go all the way to your elbows.
• Embroidery hoop: a 4” diameter embroidery hoop in plastic or wood. This is optional but will make the embellishment process easier.
• Cutting ruler: Either a 3” x 7” or a 4” x 8/12”. This is an alternative to an embroidery hoop.
• Scissors: Fine jawed pair of craft scissors.
• Lighted Magnifier (optional): There are a number of different products out there – both floor and table versions, some made by the Ott Light Company as well as many others. If you need magnification and/or focused light for detailed work you might consider getting something like this.
