I’ve been asked if I know how to do various types of book-binding and my answer is invariably yes. I have been studying hand-binding, and teaching book binding in Europe and the U.S. for over 20 years.
In this 2-day workshop, attendees will make artist’s books AND learn more advanced approaches to the hand binding of book spines.
Day 1 The Coptic Stitch—used for centuries in Europe, this binding allows the book to be laid flat on a surface where it stays open. An excellent stitch for making your own sketch books, attendees will use the Italian and hand painted art paper provided.
Day 2 The Woven Spine---Beautiful, and rarely seen. This binding is a work of art in itself. The spine of the book is the loom. Stitches establish the warp; the woof secures the pages. As in Day 1, art papers will be provided.
