This small shrine was inspired by the Israeli polymer clay guild artists I met on my travels to Israel where every artist I met had a hamsa hanging in their home as a sign of protection and to ward off evil spirits. The color palette I selected in my sample is reminiscent of the blues and golds seen in much of the art in Israel. Students in this class will create their own shrine with an embedded hamsa in the center. We will learn techniques for altering the surface of clay with rubber stamps, gold leaf, paint and embedded jewelry parts and findings. Students will also use molds to create their hamsa. Additional napkin collage techniques will be shared for the sides of the house substrate. The end project is a beautiful little house that can be hung on the wall or can sit on a shelf….and it will offer your home protection!
Materials fee $20 paid directly to instructor at beginning of class includes:
custom made house substrate that measures 7 x 3.5 x1.5 inches, gold leaf, acrylic paint, Rub n Buff, gel medium, and napkins for collage.
Supplies You Need to Bring to Class:
2 ( 2 ounce) packages of Premo or Sculpey III polymer clay, both the same color. Make sure when buying your clay that it is somewhat soft to the touch and that you can dent it. If it feels rock hard, don’t buy it! Please make sure to condition clay before class by kneading it until softened and then placing it in a baggie.
Rolling pin or even PVC pipe about 1.5 inches in diameter by about 12 inches long works too.
Assorted paintbrushes to include a fine detail brush and a one-inch flat brush
Pencil with an eraser
Small bottle of Weldbond glue or other similar white glue.
Doo-Dads-like beads, charms, jewelry parts, rhinestones, rhinestone chain, ball chain, metal findings, wings, crowns, buttons and bead caps. See pics for ideas. Stay away from plastic/adhesive back rhinestones.
Optional: a favorite napkin for collaging
