My home state of Colorado, as well as other areas in the West, inspires me with its beautiful rocky cliffs and canyons. This inspiration has evolved into an important genre in my painting portfolio. I will show you the methods I use for inspiration. We will us actual rock samples for color palette possibilities. You will become familiar with the many different texture compounds I use - some expensive, some very affordable.

Planning the compositional pattern is crucial for the success of a painting. We will use photos of sidewalk cracks to get us started. Your assignment: Look down! You can find amazing patterns for geologic abstract paintings in cracked sidewalks and driveways. I will also have many photos I have taken for you to use in your compositions.

Take photos of your favorites and bring prints of them to class. Let me show you how to develop these photos into beautiful abstract paintings. We will paint on watercolor paper, then mount our best ones on cradled wood panels.

Supply list for students to bring:
Golden Fluid Acrylics – Carol’s must have colors are Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold, Quinacridone Magenta, Turquoise (Phthalo), Titanium White and Carbon Black. Because these paints are professional grade, a small 1 oz bottle will last a long time.

Supports: 2 or 3 firm supports, such as a cradled wood panels, MDF panels, or canvas boards in sizes 8x8”, 10x10” or 9x12” ONLY. NOTHING LARGER PLEASE because our w/c paper must fit the panel. Wood panels are found at art stores and online at DickBlick.com and JerrysArtarama.com.
Please gesso natural wood and MDF panels before class.
Please gesso natural wood and MDF panels before class.

Several 11x14 sheets of 140 lb cold press watercolor paper OR 98 lb mixed media paper. We will crop and trim the paper to fit our boards. Strathmore and Canson tablets from Michaels work well.

Gloss medium (a thick liquid that dries clear) – also called Polymer medium

Gel medium (a gel solid that comes in soft, regular, heavy consistency) – bring regular or soft.

Short handled nylon brushes ( ¾ inch flat, #6 round, small detail brush) suitable for w/c and acrylic. Stiff bristle brushes do not work. Buy a new small detail brush. It’s very important that you have a good detail brush with a good point. Do not bring a rigger brush (having long bristles).

Small (1” blade) palette knife

Spray water bottle, paper towels, palette, scissors, drawing pencil, kneaded eraser, ruler, water container, brayer, spray alcohol bottle (optional), several foam plates (for transporting mediums.)

IMPORTANT: Please double check the supply list to ensure you have ALL the items on this list. If you are buying your panels at the event, be sure to bring gesso.

You can expect to COMPLETE at least two paintings! If you’re a fast worker, bring more supports.
