Book Shrines

$ 160

Celebrate the artistry and history of the book as art by creating your own personal book shrine. In this workshop we’ll prepare the covers as backgrounds for artistic expressions.Then we’ll make two book shrines with two pre-used hardback books provided by instructor. Use a variety of art techniques to distress the cover first then sand, paint, embellish, decorate, re-envision and re-create the book as a special object. Paint, collage, jewelry bits, buttons, coins, lace, and special tokens will both decorate the book and be featured inside the special window boxes.

 One book shrine will become a closed sculptural object with a window cut-out on the cover to view intriguing objects inside. The other book opens to a cut out window inside. The windows will be covered with glass or acrylic. The books are interactive since the objects inside can move around, adding charm and intrigue to create a special “viewing” experience.
 Bring personal tokens to mount inside the windows or choose from the instructor’s stash of charms, beads, buttons, game pieces, etc. to display in the windows.

$15 kit fee payable to instructor at beginning of class includes:
two hard-back books, glass or acrylic to cover the windows, sandpaper, paint, brushes, decorative, sparkly and collage papers include marbled and lokta. Embellishments include beads, jewelry pieces, gold trim and sequins. Some markers and calligraphy pens will be available to share.

Supplies You Need to Bring to Class:
Elmer’s glue or PVA adhesive, brush, scissors, craft or X-acto knife and cutting mat. Think about any favorite poetry quotes, photos of loved ones, special tokens, small shells, stones, memorabilia and personal keepsakes to insert into a window. Any painted papers, artwork, special quotes or proverbs are always nice to add.
