The Art of Batik

Harrisburg, PA 2026 is NOW OPEN

Chris Cruz
9:00 - 4:30
Thursday July 9
$185.00

Join artist Chris Cruz as she reveals the secrets of the process of painting using wax, Ginwashi Japanese Paper, QoR watercolors and soft gel applied to an Ampersand Aquaboard wood panel.  Batik is a wax-resist technique in which melted wax or the use of an oil stick is applied to fabric, paper and more to “block” watercolor paints from soaking into selected areas.

After waxing, the waxed sections stay the original color while unwaxed areas absorb the watercolor paint.

Wax choice affects line quality and texture. Traditional batik often uses a blend of beeswax and paraffin: beeswax is tackier and more flexible, which helps it adhere well and reduces unwanted cracking; paraffin is harder and more brittle, which encourages the classic “crackle” pattern when the wax is gently flexed. Some artists also use microcrystalline wax to add pliability and stronger adhesion, especially on paper or rigid surfaces. Wax is typically melted and kept just hot enough to flow smoothly—too cool and it clumps; too hot and it can smoke or spread beyond your intended marks—so good ventilation and careful temperature control are important.

The use of bold expressive colors to create a vibrant painting is a must when using a strong color palette.  Students will learn how to work with watercolor paints and various gels, maximizing boldness in color.

We will then learn the secrets of Fluid and High Flow GOLDEN paints using Gel Gloss and QoR and Watercolor Ground as an amazing layering process we can then embellish using stencils. This is a fun and exciting way to work with these materials. No previous experience needed.
