A concertina (aka accordion) book is one of the easiest types of books you can create on your own! I love this format because it functions like a traditional book, allowing you to turn the pages. Additionally, you can unfold it completely to display all the pages simultaneously.
Concertina Books are perfect for using as art journals, sketchbooks, junk journals, travel journals, and photo albums.
During the morning session, we will concentrate on designing the cover for our Concertina Book. I will demonstrate some fun creative mixed-media methods, using layers of collage, acrylic paint, and various other techniques.
In the afternoon, we'll create our concertina (accordion) folded books. This type of fold enables the sketchbook to unfold into a single sheet of paper that is 8 feet long! This adaptable format allows for personal adjustments to the substrate size, from using individual sheets measuring 6" x 8.25" to working across multiple folds for panoramas or landscapes. With 16 continuous sheets (32 sides), these distinctive sketchbooks will be crafted from Strathmore Watercolor paper.
We'll design hard covers for our sketchbooks using our own handmade designs, and a ribbon closure will complete our book.
By the end of the workshop, you will have gained a wide range of painting and collage techniques, along with a finished Concertina Book!
