This "heavy-metal" journal is reminiscent of those old time erector sets, and it is as durable as it looks. This thing will be around for years, and after you fill it with original artwork or writing, it is sure to become a fascinating conversation piece and heirloom. You will be building a large (6" x 8" x 2") all-metal journal with copper pipe hanging strap, a.k.a. "plumber's tape" and learning my unique "no-sew" wire binding. The covers, where dozens of holes alternate with altered hardware, create an magnificent effect. Both covers and spine of this book are completely fabricated "from scratch". Once you add some decorative chain and a few well-chosen beads and charms, or even bring a cool found object to attach to the cover, you make this book uniquely your own. Lots of useful techniques including cutting, bending, torching, and otherwise altering metal with chemical patinas and a torch, some basic bookbinding, and hand tool use and safety. This binding, once mastered, can be adapted all sorts of ways to make books in different sizes and other materials.
Materials Fee $40 paid at beginning of class includes:
instruction book, copper plumber's tape, copper wire, hardware, chain, beads, bead-pins, patina, and clear coat.

A Note on Student Supply Lists: Please bring your tools and supplies. It is not cool to expect others to share with you. We all have the same obstacles when travelling with this stuff. Bring what you will need, so everyone gets the most out of their classes!
Bare minimum, you will need the following tools and supplies to complete the project. Please bring to class:
* pen, pencil, scissors, ruler, sharpie, small paintbrushes
* 16 pieces of hand torn or deckled heavy, watercolor paper at 7.5" x 11 " (140# or 90# hot or cold press) Feel free to paint, or otherwise decorate, the paper before you come.
* tin snips
* wire cutters
* round nose pliers
* chain-nose pliers
* 5/16" nutdriver or socket wrench
* #2 Phillips screwdriver

* Dremel tool - sanding barrels, cut-off wheels, grinding stone
