An artist’s statement tells others about you and your work. Writing one is a powerful exercise for articulating your passion and art. But, it’s also a challenge to capture in words what is often so hard to express and intangible. No matter your medium or level of proficiency, a good statement is a useful tool to make you a better artist, gain confidence and open doors to showing your art.
In this workshop, you will be guided through a series of questions to gather information to create a sophisticated artist’s statement, and to deepen your thinking about your own art making.
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
A favorite pen
A highlighter or two
Paper to write on: lined and unlined
A sample or image of your typical art or craft
Optional: copies of artist’s statements that appeal to you.
Optional: a list of other artists whose work you admire and is similar to yours. Print outs of their artist statements. Even better is to read their statements with a highlighter ahead of time with your favorite ideas well marked. You can just bring a mobile device to search but it’s better to have them printed and read in advance.
Optional: a list of any shows you’ve been in and the dates.
All other materials will be supplied.
