Essence of Italy

Exploring Texture on Paper

Gubbio, Italy
with Clarissa Callesen

Immerse yourself in the artistry of Italy with Essence of Italy, an exclusive mixed media workshop designed to capture the soul of weathered plaster, peeling paint, and centuries-old patinas. Over the course of this one-of-a-kind experience, you’ll learn to bring the timeless textures of Italy into your art, guided by an internationally recognized artist and instructor with over 30 years of professional experience.

What to Expect:
This workshop blends technique, creativity, and the freedom to explore your artistic voice. We’ll begin by crafting a rich collection of textured papers and images using a variety of innovative techniques—many refined over two decades. You'll discover unexpected ways to use the gelli plate, creating both collage materials and standalone works of art.

Next, we’ll use these bespoke textured papers to construct a handmade book. Forget traditional bookbinding—this will be a “rogue” approach, celebrating creativity and individuality.

Finally, we’ll delve into creating one-of-a-kind mixed media paintings. Through hands-on exploration, you’ll learn about composition, editing, unifying elements, and refining your work, all while discovering how to channel your unique artistic voice.
